Anra Naw
Miracle in the Garbage (performance/workshop) on November 3 from 15-18 PM and November 5 from 11-14 PM
Naw will make amulets for the Viennese art audience. As a point of departure, she follows chukchi amulet traditions and beliefs that she grew up with. Instead of using objects found in nature in Chukotka, she uses objects found in flea markets and trash. Encountering and discussing with a member of the audience, Naw composes an amulet precisely designed for just that person’s needs.
Anra Naw was born on the island of Ayon in 1968 to a family of Chukchi reindeer herders.* She lives in Ivalo, Sapmi. She is a choreographer, poet, and writer focussing on stories from Chukchi culture and shamanism. In 2017, the Finnish National Theatre selected Naw’s stories to be produced for the Ruska Ensemble’s Arctic Odyssey tour. Naw has subsequently narrated her stories on stages from Greenland to Hong Kong. In 2022, Anra Naw received an artist fellowship from the Finnish Culture Foundation. She is currently working on a new film about the healing powers of art and shamanism.
*The Yupik people are fishers, the Chukchi are reindeer herders.
